Regions of Spain According to the Language Assistants who Live There

239 language assistants (auxiliares de conversación) told us about their experience of living and working in Spain through a survey conducted by me, Kate Peregrina.

Among other things, they were asked:

What three words come to mind when you think of [your region]?

Here’s how many responses I got from each region:

Region Circle other


Canarias, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Navarra, Valencia, did not have any ministerio language assistants this year, and no survey respondents lived nor worked in these regions. There were also no survey respondents from Cueta y Melilla.

How were these maps created? These maps were obviously created using MS Paint. Wikipedia maps were colored, then survey responses were made into word clouds through Wordle and pasted onto maps of each region by me, Kate Peregrina.

    this is incredible! I was one of the responders from Murcia, thank you so much for doing this :)

    These few words sum up so much of everything good bad stereotype and all in between for each region.
