Sex, Love, and Sober-Kissing

Thousands of people have come to Spain to work as language teaching assistants, or “auxiliares de conversación” in Spanish schools.

This year, 239 of these language teaching assistants told us about their experiences by filling out a survey that was written and analyzed by me, Kate Peregrina. I had time to do all this because I work as an auxiliar de conversación.

Notes about reading the graphs:

  • “N = ” tells the number of responses to each question.
  • The number in brackets [ ] is the number of responses to a particular answer
  • On some bar graphs the percentages add up to over 100% because respondents were asked to check all that apply.
  • In this article, “single” refers to a person who has not been in a romantic relationship during the 2013-2014 academic year.

So here’s what 239 language assistants in Spain had to say about their romantic lives during the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Questions

Among other things, respondents were asked:

  • How many people have you kissed during the 2013-2014 academic year?
  • How many people have you kissed WHILE SOBER during the 2013-2014 academic year?
  • How many sexual partners have you had during the 2013-2014 academic year?

Was it a little creepy to ask a large group of strangers about how many people they’ve kissed and had sex with?

Sure, but it made for some excellent graphs.

Relationships

46.7% of respondents reported that they had been in at least one serious romantic relationship during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Relationship

Of the 111 survey respondents who reported that they had been in a relationship during the 2013-2014 academic year, 70.2% were in a relationship at the beginning of the academic year.

Relationship1

Of the 78 respondents who were in a relationship at the beginning of the academic year, 79.5% were still in the same relationship.

The respondents who have been in a serious romantic relationship were also asked about their significant other’s ability to speak English.

Number of Partners

The averages for all respondents, respondents who had been in at least one serious romantic relationship, and respondents who had not been in at least one serious romantic relationship are as follows:
